Creating Drago's Dreamland: An Adventure Board Game for Screen-Free Fun.

Updated: Apr 20

Creating Stories of Dragons, Pixies and Quirky Creatures. Helping Diverse Learners Thrive with Drago's Dreamland Adventure Board Game.

Why? Creating Drago's Dreamland board game has always been driven by passion. As a child, I struggled with reading and my writing was difficult to decipher. I also had trouble concentrating. At school, I often escaped into a dream world, envisioning fairies in the trees outside the window. Drago’s Dreamland is my response to this. I have woven together stories and myths to help inspire children. I believe imagination and beauty are crucial for engagement. Drago's Dreamland is the game I wish I had as a child.

Childhood: I grew up in an artistic family. Creating through art was always my go to, a point of success in life. It filled family time and my personal time in large quantities. David Dallwitz ensured this. My father John Dallwitz worked on a project with indigenous Australian communities (Aṟa Irititja). Through these childhood experiences I grew a love of storytelling and appreciation of how cultural stories, mythology and folktales teach us about the world.

Qualifications: Over time I have completed a Visual Arts degree, Master of Illustration, Bachelor of Primary Education and continued training through children’s writing courses and business courses. I worked in classroom support, taught remedial spelling, and eventually spent 10 years teaching in a Waldorf school. As I slowly developed, Drago's Dreamland also slowly grew next to me. It sometimes felt like my third wonderful child. It changed so many times. It began as a board game, and developed into stories, ideas for media applications, novels, readers, all sorts. There is a great deal of work still needed to fulfil all it's imaginings.

Creation: What began as a spark of inspiration during pregnancy with my first child (he is now 29) slowly grew. Influenced by mythology, philosophy, storytelling, and Joseph Campbell’s ideas of archetype, I began creating a board game world with depth, wonder, and meaning. I researched myths from around the world, drawing inspiration from six sacred sites — places of beauty, mystery, and wonder in the natural world, as I wanted Drago’s Dreamland to celebrate and honour nature.

Slow Development: Over many years, the story, characters, artwork, and gameplay developed with the help of friends, children, students, and much honest trial and error around the table. The board game was not created overnight. It was a long road of learning new skills, refining artwork, researching mythology, testing the game, and slowly building a business around an idea that just would not go away. Drago's Dreamland is a project built from care: care for children who learn differently, care for the imagination, care for beauty, and care for the kind of family experiences that are becoming harder to find in our screen-filled world.

For children, I hope Drago’s Dreamland offers wonder, courage, story, laughter, and the freedom to get delightfully lost in imaginative play together.

For parents, I hope it offers something just as valuable: the joy of watching children connect face to face, think creatively, build language, solve problems, and share real moments of laughter and adventure together.
