Maths Fun (Circuit Activities) great for homeschoolers or teachers

(Class 1–2, Teacher Resources that are Homeschool Friendly)
Each week I run a maths fun circuit with Class 1–2 in my school setting. I love circuits because they add social learning—children work together in small groups, take turns, and stay engaged. This structure also works really well at home for families and homeschoolers looking for maths practice that feels active, playful, and manageable.
What a circuit looks like: The circuit includes 4 activities at a time. Children spend around 5 minutes at each station, then rotate.
I like to build in a natural rhythm of breathing and regulation—alternating between mentally challenging tasks and tasks that help children settle (e.g., dominoes, geometric puzzles, chopsticks pictured below)


Here are three mentally challenging
but fun maths activities to use at alternate stations
1) Maths Fun: Rainbow Facts Marble Circle for Rainbow Facts

Skills
reading numerals and understanding their value
practising Rainbow Facts (two numbers that add to 10)
Goal
Children “shoot” marbles from one number to another, joining numbers that create Rainbow Facts.
Materials Needed
marbles
number cards (or painted card numbers)
rope or play cloth (to define the playing space and stop marbles rolling away)
How to set it up
Lay out 'rainbow' number cards in a ring/loop with space between them.
Place marbles in a small pile nearby.
How to play
Children take turns aiming a marble from one number card position to another.
If the two numbers make 10, they complete the Rainbow Fact connection.
Extension
Roll a 10-sided dice. Children point quickly to the number that matches.
2) Maths Fun: Number Line
Reading and Sequencing Numbers
Using number lines in early primary years supports number sense beautifully—and in a circuit, it becomes more active and motivating than worksheet practice.

Skills
reading numerals and knowing their value
sequencing and ordering numbers smallest → largest
knowing what number comes before and after
Goal
Children sort mixed-up number cards along a long rope from left to right (smallest to largest).They place one card at a time until the shared number line is complete.
Materials Needed
number cards
a long rope or strip of fabric/play cloth
How to set it up
Lay the rope in a straight line.
Put number cards in a basket/basket-lid nearby.
How to play
Children take turns picking up one card and placing it in order on the rope.
The group works toward the shared goal of completing the correct sequence.
Extensions
A) PLUS / MINUS stepping ➕➖
Add plus/minus prompt cards. Children step along the number line to match the movement with the answer.
B) ODD / EVEN sorting
Place headings on either side of the rope (odd/even). Children place numbers on the correct side. To make it extra fun, walk the pattern left/right while saying the numbers aloud.
C) “Bridge” guess game
Put a “bridge” across the rope (a book/plank/soft bridge shape).
Children guess odd/even before placing the card.
If correct: they place it on that side.
If incorrect: they cross the bridge and place it on the other side. (No shame—just repeated guessing, learning, and fun.)
3) Maths Fun: Animal Legs
Multiplication & Division Through Grouping

This is one of my favourite circuit games for helping children understand equal groups—because it makes multiplication and division feel concrete, friendly, and visual.
Skills
Understanding repeated groups as the foundation of division and multiplication
Tables Practice: 2s, 4s, 6s, 8s (using animal legs)
Goal
I give a list of multiples (for example: 6, 8, 12, 14…), and children find out how many animals (for example: ducks with 2 legs) are needed to have that many legs.
Animals used (times tables): Ducks = 2s, Horses = 4s, Bees = 6s, Spiders = 8s
Because different animals represent different tables, children are learning:
multiplication as “equal groups” and division as “how many groups fit?” (how many animals make that total)
What you need
drawing equipment (paper, pencils/markers)
Or cut-out photocopies of animals
How to set it up
Decide which table(s) you’re practising (2s/4s/6s/8s), and identify the animal.
Write a list of multiples on board.
How to play
Children read a number (e.g., 12) and work out how many animals are needed to make that total number of legs.
They draw the correct animals and add up the legs
Repeat for the next number on the list.
Why it works for all skill levels
You can choose larger or smaller multiples depending on your learners, or you can choose easier or harder tables.
The key is that children are still building the same underlying skill: equal grouping.
